Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. (Hi-ho-hi-ho...)

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

HI-HO! Well off to work we go. I think we can agree that it's a blessing to have work to go to nowadays in this day and age. But anyway, this is one blog I couldn't wait to write. I was a huge Disney nerd growing up (and still am). I used to sketch all the Disney characters in my free time outside of school. I remember in second grade, (I went to Catholic school at St. Finbar in Burbank, CA. ), Disney studios had a contest open to students attending schools in Burbank area. I submitted my drawings and thankfully got picked. It was unbelievable. My parents took me down to Disney studios in Burbank (we were living in Sun Valley at the time), with all the other contest winners, and we got to tour Disney Studios. I want to say it was Disney's 30th anniversary at the time. I could be wrong but I believe so. Anyway, we got to tour the studio and it was epic. I was 8 years old at the time.

Can you imagine how amazing this experience would be at 8 yrs old!?

So anyway, it was great, we got all this cool Disney merchandise and on top of everything, there was a wall that if I had to guess was a mile long that went all the way down Burbank Blvd. Each school got a section of the wall that was, if I had a to guess 6x8 ft wide. And all the students got to draw our sketches on the wall. I do remember pretty vividly that I got super upset because for some reason they picked an 8th grader to paint the majority of my

drawings. What nerve right?? Kind of a silly thing maybe to be upset about but I did get to

paint my drawing of Pluto. (FYI- I can still do a pretty mean Goofy impression, my best is Goofy falling off the cliff, hehe). Needless to say I don't get to pull that out of my arsenal very often.

Anyway, back to Snow White. So my family loves to tell the story of when I was probably 2 years old (and a brat to say the least). Well from what they say. So they took me to see Snow White which was rereleased in theatres that year. I believe the original film was released in 1937 so I'm not sure how many times it has been rereleased in theatres.

So the story goes, that I was the most "odd" child because I cried when the seven dwarves were singing "hi-ho, hi-ho, it's off to work we go, and I laughed when the evil witch was talking to Snow White. I am Scorpio to I've heard we do everything backwards. So maybe that's why my family thought I was "weird."

But anyway, I recently rewatched the movie. I have been studying screenwriting for quite a number of years now so I know story fairly well thankfully, but after watching the film I'm glad I don't cheer for the witch I guess. There are some amazing lessons to be learned from this movie as an aspiring screenwriter/producer/director. Jealousy was an obvious issue with the queen. She couldn't stand the fact that there would possibly be anyone more "fair" than her in the kingdom. Having been through the ringer in more ways then one in my life, I can testify that jealousy and envy are not good traits to have in your heart. Neither is judgement or resentment of any kind. I've tried to my best to get rid of or at leaset tame those attributes but it definitely doesn't happen overnight. I have realized in my life that I have unknowingly carried around resentment or jealousy without even realizing I'm holding onto it. So I guess self awareness is good quality to develop as we get older?

I know in recent years this film has faced more criticism for not being very PC, but I am pretty nostalgic about this Disney era. If someone isn't a fan I get it but I still enjoy it,

I think it's a great film to watch especially during the holidays.

Also, one thing I always try to keep in mind when watching or writing anything is (and my dad has always said), EVERYBODY is a critic...
